Volunteers sought for tax assistance program

Placer County’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program is currently seeking volunteers.

The program, operating in conjunction with United Way and the IRS, offers free tax assistance to low-income individuals and families at locations in Rocklin and Auburn. Volunteers receive four days of training starting in January, which can also be completed online. Then they can select dates to assist with tax preparation anytime between Jan. 29 and March 29, 2018.

Volunteers work one-on-one with clients to help them file taxes and maximize refunds. No prior experience is needed. Coordinators will be on-site at all times to assist volunteers with questions.

Last year, the program generated more than half a million dollars in refunds for hundreds of Placer County residents – money that went back into the local economy.

“I wanted to give back,” said Joseph Pak, who volunteered with VITA in Rocklin last year. “People are thrilled to get their returns. You really see the impact you’re having on people’s lives.”

Pak, who has a background in finance, said he also improved his customer service skills through the experience, which was a boost to his résumé. Some of the contacts he made through VITA served as professional references and helped him land a full-time position in the finance field.

“Being a VITA volunteer was not only very meaningful, but it also helped me move my own career forward,” he said.
