The City of Colfax contracts it's law enforcement needs through the Placer County Sheriff's Office. The city currently has a population base of 1500 residents and numerous businesses, with more growth predicted in the near future. The Sheriff's Office also services the outlying County area with an additional 5000 residents. The Colfax Substation is manned by a Sergeant, 4 City dedicated deputies and 2 resident deputies, who handle the area between Colfax and Donner summit. The Colfax Substation also enjoys the services of senior volunteers.
The entire staff of the Colfax Substation requested this duty station and is very dedicated to providing excellent law enforcement services to the community.
From I-80 follow signs to Main St, Colfax. Take South Auburn St. eastbound which then turns north across railroad tracks to stop sign at Main St. Turn left on Main St - 1/2 block to Colfax City Hall and Sheriff's Substation. Located next door to Colfax Cinema.

The South Placer Substation is located in Loomis and covers the area from Newcastle to Sacramento County line. The communities served by the substation include Newcastle, Ophir, Penryn, Loomis, Granite Bay, the West Roseville/Dry Creek area, Sunset Estates, Rural Lincoln and Sheridan.
The South Placer Substation is commanded by a Sheriff’s Office captain. Staffing of the substation includes 33 patrol positions, 3 detectives, 4 patrol sergeants, 1 Community Services/School Safety sergeant, 4 D.A.R.E. officers, 4 schools resource officers, 1 community services officer, several reserve deputies, numerous volunteers and other professional staff.
The Town of Loomis contracts for its law enforcement services with the Placer County Sheriff’s Office. Some of the advantages of contracting law enforcement services include:
They do not have to duplicate a dispatch center.
The resources of the entire Sheriff’s Office are brought to bear on any major event or crime.
The substation and the entire staff for the south county area are housed in Loomis. A greater law enforcement presence is provided as patrol units for other areas serviced by the substation travel through Loomis.
Community Services are based in Loomis. This allows for greater attention and access to the department volunteers.
The Air Support Unit includes the Town of Loomis in their routine patrol operations at no extra cost to the Township.
In addition to the listed services, there is also a full-time traffic enforcement officer for the Town of Loomis. The Loomis patrol car and the traffic car are equipped with radar and lidar to assist in the enforcement of traffic laws. A Critical Accident Response team is based in Loomis and responds to any major or fatality vehicle accident to professionally investigate and prepare a report. Participation in this unit entails a higher level of training and dedication on the part of the deputies in order to attain the level of expertise necessary to investigate major traffic accidents.<
A collateral assignment of some deputies is to work bike patrol. The bicycles are used for special events and during the summer months to patrol concentrated population and commercial areas. They are a highly visible presence to local merchants and neighbors but they often have the advantage of silently and unexpectedly approaching suspects.
In addition the office volunteers, The Sheriff’s Team of Active Residents or S.T.A.R.S., is based at the South Placer Substation. The S.T.A.R.S. are used throughout the county to provide a myriad of additional services to residents and communities. S.T.A.R.S. volunteers conduct vacation checks of homes and abandoned vehicle abatement, work traffic details at parades, festivals and other events, supervise inmate worker car wash crews for county vehicles, and provide other assistance when and where they are needed most .

The Placer County Sheriff’s Tahoe Station is located about 1 ½ miles east of Tahoe City on Highway 28. It is slotted for 48 positions and commanded by a Sheriff’s captain. Staffing includes 1 field operations lieutenant, 18 patrol deputy positions, 6 patrol sergeants, 4 detectives, 1 detective sergeant, 1 problem-oriented deputy (neighborhood disputes and Placer County code violations), 1 administrative sergeant, 2 jail deputies, 1 evidence technician, 2 community services officers and 5 professional staff.
Some of the services provided by the Tahoe Station include:
- 24/7 patrol coverage.
- Search and Rescue coordination with various highly trained search and rescue teams such as the Tahoe Nordic Search and Rescue Team.
- One of the few certified high-altitude dive teams in the state. The team is used for rescue and recovery for both swiftwater and underwater operations.
- Boat patrol for the largest portion of Lake Tahoe.
- Bike patrol during special events.
Robert Montgomery Watson came to Tahoe in 1875 as a logger and became the town’s first constable in 1906. After Constable Watson’s death in 1932 he was replaced by Swedish immigrant Harry Johanson, known to the locals as Harry Jo. After taking over as constable, Harry Jo also became Tahoe’s first deputy sheriff, deputy tax collector and deputy coroner, covering his beat in the summer by horseback and by dogsled in the winter. The Tahoe station opened on September 30, 1960 in anticipation of the growth that would be created by the 1960 winter Olympics in Squaw Valley. Harry Johanson retired as Constable in 1967. He remained in the area until his death in 1983 and is buried in the Tahoe City Cemetery.
The Tahoe Station covers the largest portion of Lake Tahoe, from the California/Nevada state line on Highway 28 west to the Nevada County line in Truckee and south on Highway 89 to the El Dorado County line in Tahoma. The station also covers Highway 267 from Kings Beach to the Nevada County line in Truckee as well as a small portion of Donner Lake. The communities covered by the station include Kings Beach, Tahoe Vista, Carnelian Bay, Cedar Flat, Dollar Point, Tahoe City, Sunnyside, Pineland, Homewood, Kingswood, Northstar, Martis Valley, Alpine Meadows, Olympic Valley, Lahontan, Timilick, Sierra Meadows, Ponderosa Ranchos and Murphy Meadows.
